For and overview of the Athabasca Sand Dunes please visit the Government of Saskatchewan website:

We’ll fly from Saskatoon to Fond Du Lac, and then travel by boat to our campsite at Thomson Bay on Lake Athabasca. Base camp is the edge of 2000 square KM of active sand dunes interspersed with northern forest and small lakes and streams.

On hikes we learn how sand dune landscapes form and evolve. Some endemic (found nowhere else) vegetation includes Felt-leaved and Tyrrell’s willow, floccose tansy, large-headed woolly yarrow and Mackenzie hair grass. Sightings of northern animals are expected (but not guaranteed!)

You must be comfortable with wilderness camping for the duration of the trip, preparing your own meals and hiking from 2 to 26 km. If you are concerned about whether you are up to this challenge, consult with your doctor.

Registration fee of $2493.75 ($2375 plus GST of $118.75) includes return flight from Saskatoon to Fond Du Lac, boat travel from Fond Du Lac to Thomson Bay, hiking and learning with Greg Fenty. Safety measures like a satellite phone, bear deterrents and emergency evacuation are included. We will have 2 pretrip meetings to cover ecology, equipment to take and plane weight limits. Included in the fee is the text The Sand Dunes of Lake Athabasca, Your Adventure in Learning by Peter Jonker and Stan Rowe, 2001.

To register phone 306-966-5539 to make a deposit of 10%. Our permit with Saskatchewan Environment is for 10 people so we expect the trip to sell out early!
